Assistive Technology Overcomers

1. Melissa Blackwell – Melissa Blackwell was a second Lieutenant of the United States Army. On April 13, 2004 she was on a routine convoy in Baghdad, Iraq and her HUMVEE was hit by a roadside bomb. The blast took off her left leg. She spent a lot of time in rehab and today she stands as an above the knee amputee and was awarded a purple heart as well as a bronze star. She has since then swam in the Paralympics. She also competes in many bike racing and triathlons. To ride her bike she has to have assistive technology. The pedal is connected to her knee with a rod and a brace/holder. Without this, riding a bike would be impossible.

2. Jim MacLaren - After getting hit by a New York City bus while on his motorcycle back in 1985 and having his lower leg amputated below the knee , the former Yale football player reinvented himself and became the Babe Ruth of amputee athletes, running a 3:16 marathon and going 10:42 at the Ironman in Kona, Hawaii. He uses a bionic leg to help him run. It does not help him run faster than a normal human being. Its sole purpose is to help him be a full person and to help stabilize him so he is able to run.

3. Matt Scott - Scott, who was born with spina bifida, grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where he participated in a variety of sports alongside his able-bodied peers. Now a member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wheelchair basketball squad, Scott has won four national championships. He was also recently selected to the Paralympic squad for the second time. Without the top of the line wheel chair assisting him he would not be able to preform as well in games.
